Floyd County Public Works
The Public Works Department provides safe and efficient movement of people and goods within the county and is committed to maintaining a well kept and safe community. Public Works maintains roads, bridges, road signs, drainage and vegetation control in Floyd County. The department is prepared to respond, in conjunction with Public Safety Agencies, to rectify any situation that may be hazardous to Floyd County residents.
The Drainage crews cut trees, limbs, brush and grass along the county’s rights-of-way to help ensure unobstructed lines of sight for motorists. They also join forces with other Public Works employees in responding to community needs during and following rain, wind, snow or ice storms.
Leaf and Brush Pick-Up
Floyd County provides pickup for its citizens. Vacuum machines are used for leaf pickup during leaf season only (October to March) and only along streets with curb and gutter drainage systems. At all other times of year and along all other roads, leaves must be bagged for pickup. A work order for brush or leaf pickup should be requested through the Public Works office. Sign Shop & Grounds Division
Hundreds of different signs are made and installed along county roads and at county facilities through the Floyd County Sign Shop. Sign shop crews also are responsible for the striping of roads and county parking lots.
Right of way Herbicide Application
Some 300 miles of right-of-way along county roads are sprayed with herbicide three times each year. The spraying reduces the growth of plants that otherwise would obstruct the motorists’ line of sight.
Grounds Maintenance takes cares of all seasonal plantings around almost every County government facility. These plantings, including the "Welcome to Rome/Floyd County" signs, help make Floyd County more attractive year round.
The Warehouse provides Materials Management, Fleet Management, Purchasing and Information Management for Public Works. Receiving, warehousing, distribution, assembly, and disposal of County materials, supplies, tools, and equipment is handled from the Warehouse.
Fleet Management maintains extensive paper records as well as electronic files and a computerized database.
