Community Invited to Tomorrow’s Pop-Up Park in the River District

By Amanda Carter

The Downtown Development Promotions Committee, in partnership with PEDS, a non-profit group who advocates for pedestrians, invites the community to a Pop-Up Park on Fifth Ave this Thursday, March 15 from 4 – 7 p.m. The Pop-Up Park will kick off the Georgia Walks Summit and bring awareness to the River District and tactical urbanism. The 2018 Georgia Walks Summit is the third annual statewide gathering of transportation and public health professionals, elected officials, and community advocates committed to making our streets and communities great places to walk.

The family-friendly event will feature live music, chalk art, art show and games. Participants can enjoy refreshments provided by The Foundry Growler Station, Speakcheesy and Swift & Finch. A yarn-bomb project created by the Rome Knitterati will also be on display.

Many of the River District businesses are participating, such as Yellow Door Antiques and Sassy Salvage who will donate seating for the event. Rome Area Council for the Arts (RACA) will host a gallery of art received for the Firefly Fling Student Art Competition, and the Church at Rome will host a March Madness viewing party in their building.

The Pop-Up Park will be located along Fifth Avenue from Bale Street to West Third Street and will only encompass the parking spaces; the flow of traffic on Fifth Avenue will not be affected. Parking will be closed off in the area starting at 8 a.m. and the build-out of the Pop-Up Park will begin at 10 a.m. Parking will remain closed until 8 p.m.

This free event is made possible thanks to downtown businesses, property owners and PEDS. For more information on the Georgia Walks Summit visit For questions related to the Pop-Up Park, contact the Downtown Development Office at 706.236.4520.
