Description:
**THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED**

The purpose of this classification is to perform security, general, and specialized work functions associated with providing effective and efficient animal control whole supervising inmates assigned to animal control work detail.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Advises the public regarding state, and local codes and ordinances applicable to animal control activities; issues verbal warnings for violations of animal control laws and advises owners of their responsibilities. Transports inmates to and from correctional institution; enforces all work detail rules and regulations; maintains inmate discipline; maintains a secure and safe environment during transport and while working detail. Supervises, observes, and monitors inmate activities on a continual basis while outside detention facility; takes count of inmates as required; evaluates trustee, and minimum and medium security inmate work performance. Opens and closes animal control facility; controls facility alarm system; secures gates and bunker. Investigates calls from citizens concerning animal control issues such as potential animal abuse, animal bites, stray/nuisance animals, wild/dangerous animals, and injured /dead animals. Communicates via telephone and two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages and/or directs call to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary. Educates the public on responsibility of pet ownership, laws and ordinances, and pet adoption; assists with adopting out animals; collects money, writes receipts, and completes adoption forms. Supervises inmates in the handling of animals, retraining as appropriate; impounds dead animals and transports to landfill for disposal. Supervises inmates maintaining and cleaning animal transport vehicles, equipment, cages, and kennel area; provides for the care of animals in shelter. Supervises inmates while assisting with the euthanasia of animals. Responds to prisoner, employee, or facility emergencies, initiates established emergency procedures to effectively manage the situation; administers first aid and/or CPR when needed. Supervises and directs works detail maintaining the animal control facility grounds including tasks as mowing, trimming, and litter collection, ensures the compound and shelter are well-kept. Responds to routine requests for information or assistance from inmates, visitors, members of the staff, the public, or other individuals. Attends classes, meetings, and workshops related to work; maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable law/regulations.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED required. Must have reasonable ability to handle animals; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must attain and maintain P.O.S.T. basis correctional officer training certification within one year of appointment. Must be certified in basic first-aid and CPR. Must pass and maintain current Georgia Peach Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) certification requirements as a law enforcement officer. Must be licensed and qualified to operate a firearm.
